World's first 1.8-inch hard drive with a 60GB disk capacity for notebooks, portable media players, or GPS devices.

Samsung today introduced what they claim is the world's first 1.8-inch hard drive with a 60GB per disk capacity and a super-slim form factor measuring just 5-mm thick!

The Samsung 1.8-incn N Series features 20GB, 30GB, 40GB and 60GB per disk capacities, making the 60GB the largest one-disk storage capacity offered. It utilizes perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) to achieve the 60GB per disk.

According to Samsung, the 60GB 1.8-inch can store data equivalent to 60 135-minute movies, 1,500 40MB music videos, or 15,000 4MB MP3 music files. The drives feature 4,200 RPM spindle speed and 2MB data buffer.

The 1.8-inch disks are designed to work with smaller notebooks, portable media players, UMPCs, GPS devices, or cell phones. Samsung also claims its the quietest on the market with 1.8 Bel (sound level detectable by human ear is 2 Bel).

Samsung's N Series 1.8-inch hard drives will be available in internal or external types and are shipping now. No word on pricing.
