Wow, it seems like we were just marveling over the introduction of the world's first 8GB SD card a few moons back. Ah, that's right, we
were. Alas, Samsung took it to heart that SD doesn't cut it for your average cellphone (they run a bumpin' mobile business, after all), announcing that it has managed to pack a full eight gigabytes into the microSD form factor for mid-2008 production. That's particularly timely considering that
4GB examples haven't even gotten into widespread circulation yet -- "8GB" just has a nicer ring to it -- not to mention that the new card handily surpasses SDHC guidelines with 16MB/s reads and 6MB/s writes. For the record, a microSD card rocks a little over 20 percent of the surface area of its SD counterpart, so does this mean we can expect 40GB SD cards, like, now?
Not quite.

How long until most mobile phones can take 4/8/12/16GB mini and micro SD cards?
They seem to be taking their sweet bloody time about it.
aiken @ May 17th 2007 1:10AM
"Alas" means unfortunately, regrettably, etc. Kinda weird to bemoan Samsung's development of 8GB micro SD cards and then get all excited about them.
Cody @ May 17th 2007 1:30AM
I mean microSD, of course.
Cody @ May 17th 2007 1:30AM
So what standard is this using? Will this mount as 8GB in any device that uses miniSD cards?
CB @ May 17th 2007 4:40AM
Micro SD cards are just silly small, I have just put the whole of western Europe Tomtom maps on a card the size of my little pinky fingernail and there's 1.2gb left, surely these things are approaching brain memory density.
strider_mt2k @ May 17th 2007 6:35AM
Terminology is going to trip everyone up here if it isn't applied properly folks!
SD and SDHC should be clearly defined!
While SOME SDHC devices MAY be compatible with standard SD cards, standard SD devices cannot handle SDHC cards.
I think the SD Consortia could be a little clearer about this.
Those chickens might come home to roost however in the form of consumer confusion.
Frankenstein Black @ May 17th 2007 9:11AM
8GBs of tech blow, era data, fiting on the size of a pinky fingernail. that means iPhone 2.0 should have at minimum tripple the current space offering...

Does the n95 support the hc cards?
MyMemory @ May 20th 2007 3:29PM
Yep, fully compatible http://www.mymemory.co.uk/compatible-memory/Mobile_Phones/Nokia/Nokia_N95
ElectroPig™ Von FökkenGrüüven @ Dec 9th 2007 12:17PM
The N95-1 supports up to 8Gig I'm told.
Although I've read the "successully tested" only online, I DO, however, know from personal experience that 4Gig MicroSD/HC cards (SanDisk in my case) DEFINITELY work with both the N95-1 and the N95-3. (If you're not sure of the -1/-3 distinction, hit http://myspace.com/ElectroPig for brief notes, and links for further information)
Note: The N95-2 is also known as the "N95 8 Gig", and has no card slot available. (The Bastards!!!)

Hello, iPhone killers!!
kael @ May 21st 2007 9:06PM
Ayle,
Despite the N95 spec mentions that it supports only up to 2Go microSD cards http://forum.nokia.com/devices/N95 , according to SanDisk the N95 is compatible with microSDHC cards http://www.sandisk.com/Compatibility/Device(8461)-Nokia-N95.aspx . :)
Would someone give a try so that we could get a confirmation ?
friedbrains @ Jun 17th 2007 4:31PM
4GB microSDHC from SanDisk is fully compatible with N95 as discussed in this forum-> http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1158665&page=1

Will this 4GB mirco SDHC card work in the HTC TyTN II (Kaiser)? If yes, is the 8GB micro SDHC compatible too?

I realize this might be getting a little ahead of things, but does anyone know if the new Verizon LG Voyager VX10000 (Verizon's "answer" to the Iphone, that's coming out sometime this month), will handle which type of (up to 8GB) micro-SD card -- standard Micro-SD or the HC style. I realize it is not out yet, but curious if anyone knows more than the general public on this one ? See http://knightknetwork.com/2007/10/31/vx10000-voyager-spec-sheet/ for spec sheet.
Doug @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:07PM
I just chatted w/ a Verizon Wireless agent who told me that the Voyager phone is compatible with the microSD card but I belive its the standard type not the HD.
Ryan K @ Nov 9th 2007 1:41PM
The new Verizon Blackberry Pearl claims that it can handle an 8GB micro SD card.

Lynn @ Jan 24th 2008 11:20PM
The manual on the website now says it supports up to 4GB micro sd on the A737 - I hope it does, I'm about to buy one
BilleBob @ Jan 5th 2008 3:54PM
The LG Chocolate (8550)will accept an 8GB microSD card from Sandisk.
Does anybody know if the U740 (dual flip)from Samsung will? It says only 2GB max, but I have seen some comments suggesting it can take at least 4GB if not 8GB. Help is appreciated!!
sim @ Jan 20th 2008 7:07PM
billiebob,
you said the vx8550 accepts the 8gb microSD. I just purchased an 8gb microSDHC for it and it doesn't recognize the files i put on it. does it have to plain microSD or should the SDHC version be accepted too?
Any help appreciated.

Is the 8gb micro sdhc compatible with the att tilt?
Jennifer @ Apr 18th 2008 7:42AM
My Samsung A501 only seems to accept up to 1Gb microSD cards. What am I going to do with my 2Gb Sandisk card now?! Why build in a size limit/restriction - They should just read to the cards capacity. At least issue a firmware upgrade I can apply - Samsung do you hear me?!
Damn engineers need a kick in the b@llz for me...

I have a Samsung SGH-A737 phone and i was wanting to buy a memory card. Is this phone compatible with SDHC cards or just SD cards. I wanted to buy a 4gig or 8 gig card and could only find them as SDHC cards.
Please comment back , thanks

For all the T-Mobile folks that have BlackBerrys, read this:

kyle.dille @ Jun 10th 2008 3:11PM
Better yet, here is the chart:
The maximum size microSD memory card supported depends on the handheld software version. Review the following information on supported microSD file size:
BlackBerry handheld software version microSD card size limit
Software version: 4.2.0 Up to 2GB
Software version: 4.2.1 Up to 4GB
Software version: 4.2.2 Up to 4GB
Software version: 4.3.0 Up to 8GB
As of today, June 10th, 2008, T-Mobile is on software version 4.2.2.180 for the BlackBerry Curve 8320 and therefore the 8Gb cards do not work. I was told by RIM that it will recognize 4Gbs of the 8Gb capacity but i have not had anyone verify this. Also, i have not found anywhere any information about if the BlackBerrys support MicroSDHC either so if anyone have info on this, please respond!
Thanks all!
Mikey.Eff @ Jun 28th 2008 2:09PM
Yeah, I bought a Sandisk microSDHC 8GB with the special SDHC card reader. After formatting in the Curve 8320 and then in XP (FAT32), I was able to see 7.59GB total, but couldn't load more than 3.4GB of video/mp3 onto the card.
